What is scrotal cellulitis?
Scrotal cellulitis is inflammation of the scrotal skin, usually associated with scrotal tenderness and swelling. It may be secondary to a superficial skin infection or inflammation of the testis, and urgent evaluation is necessary. If left untreated infections can progress and become life-threatening. Patients who are more susceptible to these infections are diabetics and men who are immunocomprimised. Signs and symptoms are skin discoloration, redness, swelling, and tenderness of the scrotum. Patients may or may not have systemic signs of infection such as fever and chills.
Evaluation involves a physical exam as well as an ultrasound of the scrotum to evaluate the cause of infection or inflammation.
Treatment is based upon diagnosis and often requires antibiotics and surgery.
